Conventional puffing

Puffing

Technology

Steam fails to flow through the product, or does so only in an inconsistent way, making it impossible to condition individual grains with energy evenly. This lack of homogeneity gives rise to a wide range of grain-sizes for the puffed product and therefore to low yields.

The closure mechanism on conventional systems is actuated abruptly, resulting in a loud bang. Turbulence causes the product to shoot out of the puffing gun in a completely uncontrolled way, for collection in the expansion chamber. This uncontrolled drop in pressure and strong turbulence make homogenous expansion impossible.

Commercial aspects and environmental factors

Very high levels of mechanical wear on the puffing plant, as many moving parts are subjected, during the expansion process, to extremely high, uncontrollable recoil forces.

A machine operator must be permanently on duty to run and monitor the plant.

High levels of energy wastage due to radiation loss from secondary heating systems (naked gas flames, electrical heating elements, etc.).

Operating safety and noise emissions

The abrupt opening of the cover produces a sound similar to that of a loud cannon discharge, leading to serious noise problems and long-term damage to the health of machine operators. Noise protection and structural reinforcement, separation and insulation measures are required, which considerably increase costs.
